Snap Shot Day

Snapshot Day is a one-day citizen-based water quality-monitoring event. The geographic focus is the entire Lake Tahoe and Truckee River watersheds. TRWC coordinates volunteers for the “Middle Truckee” portion of the event. Other partners include: Clean Water Team of the State Water Resources Control Board, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, and Nevada Department of Environmental Protection.

Small teams of volunteers go out to various sites in the watershed, do a stream walk, take photos, and collect water quality measurements and samples. All the data is collected, analyzed, collated and reported back to the community. The report is published each fall. The data can be used by various groups and agencies as part of assessing water quality.

The goals of this event are to increase citizen interest and participation in water quality issues. It is also intended to provide baseline data that could potentially be used to identify restoration and other improvement projects, and to create a large-scale collaborative effort to prevent further degradation of water quality.
